Braking Resistors by Riedon Resistors

What is a braking resistor?

A braking resistor provides protection in different systems to prevent hardware damage caused by an excess amount of power that may flow back into the system.

Three different types of braking resistors.

High power metal clad braking resistors, wirewound technology and slim profile high power metal clad braking resistors. Each of these mechanical configurations. Each of these braking resistors can be used for many different types of products. Whether it’s renewable energy, power conversion, motordrives, or any other application that can use the protection from too much power flowing back into the system potentially damaging other components. Converting the unwanted electrical surges to heat protects the product or devices from electrical damage. By preventing this backflow of power towards the VFD, rather than towards a motor protects the other electrical components in the system.

These braking resistors have a power rating from 60 to 500 watts and each provide exceptional heat transfer. In addition to this each of these braking resistors are less sensitive to heatsink requirements making it easier than ever to use in your product.

Features of Braking Resistors

Some of the features of these braking resistors include extruded aluminum housings, long term stability, a tolerance of 1%, 5% and 10%. Another great feature is the compact packaging for each of these resistors taking up less room to perform their functions.

Applications of Braking Resistors

While there are many applications for using a braking resistor, some of the largest industries that use these types of resistors include companies that provide power conversions. Renewable energy companies also use these for products that deal with power such as hydroelectric, wind turbine, and residential and commercial solar.

Motordrives are another product that use braking resistors. By having these resistors in place, it protects the other electrical components of the engine from unwanted power surges. By converting the unwanted electrical surges within these types of products, hardware damage and/or nuisance faults in a VFD can be prevented.

When using braking resistors with power conversion, these resistors will absorb unwanted spikes in power produced by the power semiconductors to ensure durability of the system.

Using braking resistors with renewable energy the excess power can be dissipated to maintain a set level of energy production levels with these products.
